Top best answers to the question «What type of wave needs a medium»

What are the four types of waves?

  • The three types of seismic waves are Primary Waves (P-Waves), Secondary Waves (S-Waves), and Surface Waves.
  • Sound waves and ocean waves are mechanical ones. Therefore, they need a medium to travel. Ocean waves are caused by energy shifting the water, while sound waves can travel through many mediums, including air and water. On the other hand, light waves are electromagnetic ones which can indeed travel without the help of matter. Other than light, this privilege also belongs to x-rays and radio waves.
Waves that do require a medium are called mechanical waves
mechanical waves
Mechanical waves can be produced only in media which possess elasticity and inertia. There are three types of mechanical waves: transverse waves, longitudinal waves, and surface waves. Some of the most common examples of mechanical waves are water waves, sound waves, and seismic waves.

A mechanical wave requires a medium to pass through. There are transverse waves which do require a medium for their transmission. For example, water waves.
